Brick Awards 2019 – The Winners
On 13th November 2019, the Brick Awards returned for its 43rd consecutive awards ceremony, celebrating some of the most unique, versatile and aesthetically stunning brick developments across the nation.
Modular Clay Products are proud to have supplied bricks to architects and from manufacturers, several of whom were shortlisted for four separate awards this year. Each nominated building for the 15 categories can be found here.
The BDA commemorate projects of the highest calibre in this annual ceremony, and this year’s winners are no different. Every single winner of the 2019 awards are developments of exceptional quality, and each contain unique brick blends to make some beautiful designs. There is work of creativity and accuracy amongst all nominations, which should be commemorated in their own rights. All shortlisted clay brick buildings will be added to the Brick Awards Compendium.
Let’s take a look at the Supreme Award winner first of all, which is presented to an exemplar.
SUPREME AWARD WINNER
Project: The Dorothy Garrod Building
Architect: Walters & Cohen Architects
The Dorothy Garrod Building, based in Newnham College in the University of Cambridge, creates a fresh, somewhat obscured entrance to the College along Sidgwick Avenue. Having been opened in October 2018, the building accommodates student living, teaching spaces and a roof garden as well as a gym surrounded by glass. It was awarded a RIBA East ‘Building of the Year’ Award earlier this year, while Stirling Award winner Goldsmith Street was one of the shortlisted buildings.
Having been built with completely durable materials, the Dorothy Garrod Building weaves within the already standing college buildings, creating something of a façade. The brick design consists of full-height brickwork panels alternated with glazing, giving a ‘hit-and-miss’ layout. This helps the building sit impeccably into the texture of the other surrounding buildings.
The Sidgwick Blend bricks were used for this project, which were made from a mixture of Northcot Plumstead and Lynham Red bricks.
The Dorothy Garrod Building also won both the Medium Housing Development as well as the Craftsmanship Awards, the latter of which included the Perse School’s Performing Arts Centre which Modular Clay had chosen a specific blend of brick for.
The Performing Arts Centre was also up for the Education Award, which was ultimately won by the Royal College of Pathologists, designed by Bennetts Associates.
Hillary Satchwell, the Brick Awards 2019 Head Judge, said:
“The Supreme Winner, the Dorothy Garrod Building, really impressed the judges who felt it was exceptional in a number of ways.”
“It manages to be exemplary teaching and research space, as well as student housing; it is a strongly urban and welcoming response to the surrounding streets in this part of Cambridge; and at the same time is an amazing work of carefully considered and expressive brick design and craftsmanship. Quite some achievement.”
INNOVATION AWARD WINNER
Winner: The Interlock
Architect: Bureau de Change Architects
Modular Clay Products also supplied First Quality Multi bricks for one of the nominees, the W1 London, 35 Marylebone High Street. The First Quality bricks are a blend of orange and red facing bricks which have an exquisite finish to them, really complementing the exterior of the W1.
The Interlock also won the Small Housing Development Award.
COMMERCIAL AWARD WINNER
Winner: The Ray Farringdon
Architect: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris
Modular Clay Products supplied Henley Red bricks for the exterior of a nominee in this category, the Caxton in Buckingham Green.
