The Savoy, London

PROJECT
THE SAVOY HOTEL, LONDON

PRODUCT
MULTIPLE BRICK SIZES AND COLOURS

As part of the extensive renovation programme at London’s Savoy Hotel, the team leveraged its experience in similar projects to produce a perfect match between the colour of the new brickwork and that of the original facade. Furthermore, with other sub-contractors working on the project, Modular Clay Products’ expertise was soon in demand right across the site.

As part of this wide-ranging renovation programme, The Savoy’s bricks were being replaced for aesthetic reasons. Our task was to provide a seamless match between the cream and white colours of the existing bricks and the replacement bricks, as well as matching the sizes and finding special-shaped bricks where appropriate.

Background
In December 2007, one of London’s highest-profile hotels, The Savoy, was closed for a major three-year renovation programme. Based on an interior design by Pierre Yves Rochon and an exterior design by architects ReardonSmith and Buro Happold, the refit had an original budget of £100 million.

Modular Clay Products was introduced to the Savoy project in 2009 through PAYE one of the companies carrying out restoration work at the site.

Challenge
Tim West, Managing Director of Modular Clay Products, describes the scope of the project. “As part of this wide-ranging renovation programme, The Savoy’s bricks were being replaced for aesthetic reasons. Our task was to provide a seamless match between the cream and white colours of the existing bricks and the replacement bricks, as well as matching the sizes and finding special-shaped bricks where appropriate.”

Solution
The team began by visiting the site to collect samples of the various existing bricks and sent them to the laboratory for colour matching. Once colours had been confirmed and costs approved, Modular Clay Products was quickly rewarded with an order to supply three different colours and three different sizes of bricks for PAYE. The team sourced the bricks from a trusted supplier on the Continent and managed the deliveries from start to finish, including handling challenges posed by site restrictions.

Benefits
However, with two other sub contractors working on different areas of the site, Modular Clay Products was able to extent its remit by supplying bricks in a total of nine different colours for six different areas of the renovation project. Evan Salmon, Sales Manager at Modular Clay Products, sums up: “Overall, we supplied more than 30,000 bricks for The Savoy. Best of all, based on the success of this project, we have gone on to build a solid working relationship with PAYE and have since supplied many of the firm’s other sites.
