Brick 2019 Award Nominations The Brick Awards 2019 (BDA)
The Brick Development Association (BDA) Brick Awards return for another awards ceremony, commemorating the best projects by architects all over the nation.
With 43 years to their name, BDA have honoured projects of supreme quality and intellectual design. Last year’s Supreme Winner award was bestowed upon Storey’s Field Community Centre & Nursery, a stunning community building designed by MUMA which also won the Outdoor Space and Public category awards.
Shortlisting falls upon contractors, developers, architects, planners and various other brick specialists who visit projects and report back to the judging panel for debate.
This year, Modular Clay Products have the distinction of supplying bricks from manufacturers and architects who have been shortlisted for four separate 2019 Brick Awards. They are as follows:
The W1 London is a Marylebone-based property development consisting of penthouses, townhouses and apartments. Initially to replace an office building once inhabited by the BBC, the W1 project portrays a 30s inspired aesthetic across the exterior using Modular Clay Products’ First Quality Multi brick.
Produced using a clamp fired kiln, the First Quality is a supreme quality brick with a vibrant finish, emanating a deep blend of orange and red. From a distance, it complements the traditional exterior of the W1 in amongst the 1930s themed façade going across the high street.
Dixon Jones are the architects up for the award.
Located near St James’s Park, the Caxton is one of three distinctive, visually spectacular buildings. In amongst retail space and apartments, the Caxton is a 28,000 square foot red brick office with a roof terrace.
The building is renowned for its projecting brickwork, which is laid in a diaper pattern, making it one of the more conspicuous buildings in Buckingham Green. The Henley Red bricks used in the exterior are genuinely handmade, chosen for both their vivacity and dense texture.
Notably, one of our partners York Handmade Brick Company are sponsoring the Commercial Award.
The architects nominated for this award are Fletcher Priest, who have notably worked on other monumental London landmarks including the Brunel Building, Woodbury Down and Piccadilly Circus.
The Perse School in Cambridge, known for its diverse curriculum in the artistic subjects, particularly theatre and music. Named after a former director of the National Theatre, the eponymous Peter Hall (a former Perse pupil), the architects Haworth Tompkins shared that connection having done superb architectural work on this building, alongside the Theatre Royal, the Old Vic, the Battersea Arts Centre and many more.
The new performing arts centre, consisting of a 400-seat auditorium, workshop and wholesome naturally lit foyer, has been completely reshaped and modernised while retaining its core landscape features and natural exterior décor. Modular Clay Products specifically chose a blend of brick that would encompass both traditional and captivating to the eye.
Inspired by the Old Gaut bricks traditionally used in towns like Cambridge, the specific blend of bricks is versatile in the application on the building.
York Handmade Brick Company were the manufacturer of this particular blend.
